Labor market - measurement and observation

The labor market of Europe has undergone powerful changes over the past few years both quantitative and qualitative. The focus of the "Labor market - measurement and observation" conference is a methodology for measuring these changes and for their analysis, in particular in the member states of the European Union.

The first session of the conference will be on the relationship between the labor market and other spheres of the economy, the influence of economic growth on the labor market and the synchronization of cyclical fluctuations which occur in the general level of economic activity, with the cycles of the labor market. The results of studies on the behavior of the labor market both in the long and short-term will be presented in the first session.

The second sessions of the conference will focus on the structural changes occurring on the labor market. Papers will be presented on studies of specific types of structural unemployment and frictional unemployment. During these sessions we also intend to raise the issue of a measurement for natural unemployment and its changes throughout the past few years as well as for the indicative changes for supply and demand. The papers presented in this session will relate to the issue of employer demands verses the qualifications of the work force.

The third session of the conference will be devoted to the evaluation of national government policy on improving labor market conditions. The papers presented here will provide an analysis of long-term unemployment and an estimation of hidden unemployment. The framework of this session will also include discussion on the elasticity of European job markets, and systemic and institutional solutions which are now being carried out in certain economies.
